Firebird International Raceway

 

March, 1983: Construction of began in March, 1983 by Charlie Allen & partners.

August 19, 1983: The track opened. Besides drag racing, there were three boat races and an HDRA off-road event.

1984: Season opener: Superbowl of Drag Racing: Shirley Muldowney beat Don Garlits in a best of five top fuel match race.  Later in the season, Firebird hosted the Coors 32 FC Championships, a Jets vs Funny Car Spectacular and the IHBA World Finals boat races.

1985: Superbowl of Drag Racing: Garlits beats Gary Beck with three straight wins. This year, Firebird hosted the Inaugural         NHRA Fall Nationals

1986: Superbowl of Drag Racing: Brings Shirley Muldowney back to racing after her near-fatal accident. Second NHRA Fall Nationals. Two IHBA competitions and IMSA racing.

1990: Bondurant School moves to Firebird; second road course built

1991: 1.1 Mile East Road Course opens

1992: February: Motorcraft-Ford NHRA Nationals becomes first drag race to have live, national event TV coverage.
